Do you ever feel like as if you are facing a problem that just completely overwhelms you? Maybe it is a difficult marriage or perhaps it’s a challenge your child is walking through. Maybe your finances stress you out or perhaps ongoing sickness makes you feel weak.

Before my home had been completely built, I had been shown a piece of framed art that I was determined to buy and I even knew exactly where I would display it.  It shows a husband holding a sling in one hand standing next to his wife and their little girl, whose arms are wrapped around her Daddy’s leg, while they look up at a giant in front of them.  It clearly depicts my little family about a decade ago.

My son was a newborn and it seemed as if we were in the fight of our lives.  Trying to make sense of a diagnosis, living in denial, inundated with medical appointments, and enduring hospitalization after hospitalization, we were barely able to stand against this sickness.  We were exhausted and felt alone.  How could we possibly face this giant?

“Your Love Defends Me” by Matt Maher reminds me how:

“Day after day, night after night
I will remember, You’re with me in this fight
Although the battle, it rages on
I know the war is already won
Surely my God is the strength of my soul
Your love defends me …
And when I feel like I’m all alone
Your love defends me”

And the best example is seen in 1st Samuel 17 where we read about how God empowered David, who was young and not even a warrior, to slay the giant Goliath.  In spite of how everyone around him was filled with fear, David boldly faced Goliath and said, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty,” in verse 45. David was confident that his Defender was with him.

One important detail that I didn’t mention about the framed art is that behind the little family stands a mighty angel of God.  Every day I am reminded that no matter what circumstance I face, I am not alone.  Dear Friend, God’s love for you is the greatest of all. He is forever faithful and He will help you face your giant.
