He was kind, probably in his upper teens, but seemed wiser than his years.

We were driving through the dirt roads of Guatemala, and he sat in the row behind me, staring out the window. We were part of a group, eager to be in this country to share our stories and our faith. I was taking in the scenery, the stray dogs roaming the streets, the small huts in desperate need of repair, the children playing outside with household items.

Life here seemed so different.

I turned around to him and said, “I feel sorry for the people here…”, as I recalled all the luxuries of home.

With his thick accent, he said in English, “You don’t need to feel sorry for them! They are happy living this way. They don’t know any different.”

This was my “aha” moment. This WAS home for them; they didn’t anything more to bring contentment. I was grateful for the valuable lesson from my Guatemalan friend.

I began to examine my own heart and thought of “things” that are vying for my attention. Was my self-worth or joy tied to my possessions?

I’m so grateful to live in this blessed country. This is the life I know, and I have my parents to thank for sacrificing time, money, and energy to travel here to make life better for me. They did it for me.

Yet, it makes me also wonder…have I become numb to the conveniences of paved roads, stellar educational systems, incredible healthcare systems, and the countless bins of toys?

A trip to the other side of the world can certainly hand you another lens to look through. While my ultimate joy can only be found in Jesus, I needed to be grateful for what I had.

Amidst the chatter, the theories, and the debates that swirl around us, may we never lose sight of the luxuries and freedoms we enjoy right here where we are.

Check out this verse that comes with a condition: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

“IF my people…”

IF we pray, THEN…we get the blessing.

Our country was built on God’s Word and may it continue to find its foundation there.

We are embarking on a new season in this place we call home. Let’s be intentional in praying for each of our leaders and for this land that we love. We have a responsibility to do that.

IF we do that, THEN we are certain to receive the healing and the blessing we so desperately need.
