It’s one thing to have confidence. It’s another to have “foolish confidence”, as mentioned in Psalms 49:13.

What’s the difference?

Your first thought may be the people who make the blooper reel of the talent shows we watch on television. There is some truth to that but it can go much deeper than our ability to carry a tune.

If we look ahead to the words of Jesus, He talks about the wise vs the foolish man. The wise man built his house on the rock; the foolish man built his house on the sand.

Maybe you know how the rest of the story (or song) goes: the rain, floods and wind came. In spite of the storm, all was well for the man whose house was founded on the rock. Unfortunately, that was not the case for the man who built his house on the sand.

“…it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (Matthew 7:27b)

It’s easy to look at a man choosing sand as a foundation and judge his poor choice. But if we’re honest, we’ve all been there in one way or another.

We place our confidence in things that are as shifting as the sand and build our lives on them.

Our looks, jobs, friends, titles, and skills may temporarily provide some footing for us to stand. However, all it takes is time, one wrong decision, or a diagnosis outside of our control…and our source of confidence is gone.

As many victories as David had, his confidence was never in himself. He recognized that his help came from the Lord, the maker of Heaven and earth.

Psalms 44: 6 For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. 7 But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. 8 In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.

When we make our boast in Christ alone, we build our lives on the Rock that is unchanging. Even when the rains come down and the floods go up, our lives will stand firm. ~Anu
