Do you find yourself in a dry season with God?  Do you find it difficult to connect with God?

I do.

And it’s more often than I want to admit.

When things get tough, I question if God really has my back and is going to take care of me.

Growing up, I feel like I was implicitly taught that if you do “A” and “B” then you can expect “C” as a result.

But what happens when A+ B doesn’t equal C?

I go back to the basics.

I turn to the scripture and go back to what I know to be truth.

In the Bible, David was no stranger to this feeling.

David’s relationship with God looked more like a roller coaster than a steady line.  He went from the high of seeing God deliver a giant into his hands and bringing him into the favor of King Saul, to running for his life from that same king.

And through it all David chronicles his emotions in the many Psalms that he wrote.  David’s emotions were raw and real.  He boldly questions God’s fairness and tells Him directly that God has abandoned him and has let his enemies get away with evil.

But just as our relationship with God can ebb and flow, David’s did too.  We watch him go from the deepest darkest valley to highest of mountains.

But David always comes back to the place of realizing that God is who He says He is.

David’s writings shift from hopelessness to declaring the love and faithfulness of God.

David beautifully wrote how those who trust in God are as secure as Mount Zion, which can never be shaken.  He declares that God is his source and this God watches over him and never sleeps on the job.  And those who obey the Lord will enjoy the blessing of family and see God’s faithfulness into next generation.

And yet with all David’s ups and downs, God declares that David is a man after his own heart.

I am encouraged today that God can handle my ups and downs too.  I am encouraged that even in my dry season, God is still who He says He is.

And as I get back to the truth that I know, I’m finding that God meets me there and brings me through.
