There’s a song that I have been singing all week and I can’t seem to get it out of my head.
It comes from Revelation 5 where we read the story of a scroll that was sealed and in the right hand of the one who sat on the throne. The scroll could not be opened because it was sealed with seven seals and only one who is worthy would be able to open the scroll. It reminds me of only one who was worthy enough to wield Thor’s hammer in the Avengers movie (for those who are Marvel fans) :).
The author in the book of Revelation weeps bitterly because he sees that no one is worthy to open the scrolls.
But one of the elders tells him to stop weeping. He tells him that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne has won the victory and HE is worthy to open the scroll.
And just like you would expect in a great action movie, the hero of the story, Jesus appears before them…..but as a lamb who was slain…rather than a majestic warrior.
He steps forward and takes the scroll from the hand of God and then the voices of millions of angels and living beings sing in a mighty chorus “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!…Blessing and honor and glory and power to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” (Revelation 5: 1-14, NLT, NIV)
This passage is so beautiful and full of hope because I see you and I in it.
You see, all of us represent those who are unworthy to open the scroll.
We are all imperfect. We are all broken. No one is whole. And no matter what we do, we will never measure up or ever be worthy enough.
But that’s what’s so beautiful about it. We don’t have to measure up or be perfect.
The scripture says “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NIV)
While we were still sinners (and still are) His blood covered and still covers our brokenness and our imperfections. And because of that, we are no longer cursed to death, but we can live forever with God, and live victoriously here on the earth.
I love this quote by Pastor Craig Groeschel. He says “Our assignment isn’t to show others how good we are. Our assignment is to show others how good God is”.
I pray that you would find freedom in Christ’s sacrifice and give a little more grace to yourself and to the broken and imperfect people in your life because He is worthy.
Is He Worthy (by Chris Tomlin)
Is anyone worthy?
Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah
Who conquered grave
He is David’s root and the lamb who died to ransom the slave
Is He worthy?
Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and power and glory?
Is He worthy of this?
He Is!
He is worthy
