So, who are you voting for?

Just kidding. I know who I’m voting for and you know who you are voting for … so, we’ll leave that right there.

We all have our reasons why we feel our particular candidate is the better choice. Maybe we like their platform or even their personality.  We may prefer their plan for the economy and the pandemic.  As Christians, we may even choose the person we believe aligns more closely with Kingdom values.  (By the way, I’ve heard that argument for both sides.)

But here’s a fact – if you and I aren’t voting for the same person, one of us is going to be disappointed.

I think we need to let that sink in.

Then what?

If previous elections are any indicator, we should not succumb to complaining or degrading the opposing party. Also, waiting for our elected leader to fall on his face will not do anyone any good.  I’ve heard it said that even if you don’t like the pilot, no one ever gets on a plane and hopes it will crash. We all just want to enjoy the ride and get to where we want to be.  Isn’t that what we all really want for our lives too?

As Kingdom citizens, we should follow what scripture says:

1. We pray.

Prayer changes things … and it changes me.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior … (1 Timothy 2:1-3)

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. (Jeremiah 29:7)

2. We do our part.

Be a Joseph or Daniel.  Serve on your city council or school board. Let your voice be heard in a way that produces positive change.

Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. (Daniel 6:3)

Do you want to be on good terms with the government? Be a responsible citizen … That’s also why you pay taxes—so that an orderly way of life can be maintained. Fulfill your obligations as a citizen. Pay your taxes, pay your bills, respect your leaders. (Romans 13:3,6-7)

3. We trust God.

Throughout scripture, God used the most pagan kings to accomplish HIS purpose on the earth.  Pharaoh, Cyrus, Nebuchadnezzar, Xerxes, Darius … He used them all for His glory and the good of His people.

The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases.  (Proverbs 21:1)

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. (Romans 13:1)

But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne.  Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you. (Psalm 9:8,10)

God bless America … my home sweet home.
