Call it a midlife crisis, but the past few months have been different for me. Not bad different. Just different different.

I celebrated a birthday….and so did my son. He turned seventeen! I can’t think of a more fun and exciting season of life. And earlier this year, that same son got his driver’s license. Even more fun and exciting…for him.

So, for the first time in seventeen years, my Uber services are no longer needed. You’d think this would be a welcome reprieve for me. No more rushing out of work or waiting in the school car line to pick up my boys….but I’m finding, I enjoyed being a chauffeur more than I realized. It was part of my routine…and as odd as it may sound, part of my purpose.

Which leaves me asking myself and God one simple question.

Now what?

What do we do when our primary roles and responsibilities have been outsourced? What do we do when a new season of life begins, but we were still enjoying the old one? What do we do when the enemy makes us question our purpose or if we even have one anymore?

We turn to God’s Word and find…if we still have a pulse, we still have a purpose. And that’s good news.

In Acts 13:22 Paul is given the opportunity to encourage the synagogue of Pisidian Antioch. He goes over a bit of Jewish history and includes two powerful statements concerning King David.

He (God) testified concerning him (David). I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.

Verse 36 goes on to say, ‘For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation…he fell asleep.”

Purpose isn’t just a cute buzzword. Like the air we breathe, purpose keeps us going.

It doesn’t begin if or when we get married nor does it end when our children get their driver’s license. Our God given purpose begins when we say yes to Jesus and ends when we breathe our last breath.

Whether we are forty six, seventeen, still trying to figure out a career or nearing retirement…as cliche as this may sound, God has placed a unique purpose inside the heart of each one of us!

It isn’t mystical or even complicated.

According to the life of King David, it involves simple every day obedience. It’s being someone God knows He can count on.

So, now what?

As it was said of King David, I pray it will one day be said of me (and you), “She did everything I asked her to do….She served God’s purpose in her generation.”

That’s what.
