This past weekend, I was able to partake in a unique experience. A video chat had been organized for my father’s paternal cousins and their children all over the world. What a joy to connect with many after years of not seeing one another.

One of the most special parts of the call was a slideshow of my grandfather and his nine siblings. Each sibling was featured with their spouse and the names of their children were listed. For someone who loves history, this had me excited beyond belief!

In fact, I was so thrilled that later in the evening, I went through each slide with my husband and children. I shared stories that I recalled of various family members and helped them connect the dots of relatives they have seen over the years.

My children’s heads were spinning because it was a lot of information to take in. But they in turn bombarded me with questions to make sure they understood it all. It was sweet to see them in awe as they expressed gratitude for the heritage we have.

This experience made me think how there is immense value to not only knowing where you come from but also, to remember the names and stories.

In the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1, Verses 2 through 16 provides a detailed list of names, some who were faithful throughout their lives and some who had a colorful past. Verse 17 says “there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.” It’s noteworthy how it wasn’t filled with perfect people, yet each person was in the lineage of the Messiah. Wow!!

Dear Friend, be reminded today of who you are: a child of the Most High God. Whether you’re the first in your family to know Jesus as your Savior or whether you come from generations of believers, you have been saved by His amazing grace. Praise God!

And when you reflect on your life, be reminded of all those who have contributed to who you are today whether they are from your biological family or from the family of Christ. Thanks be to God!

“O my soul, bless God.
From head to toe, I’ll bless His holy name!
O my soul, bless God,
don’t forget a single blessing!”
(Psalm 103:1-2 MSG)
