The past few weeks have been challenging with work, children, and family.  A few curveballs came in each of these areas of my life.  My initial thought was what am I going to do?  How am I going to handle this?

The truth is, life brings me these challenges quite often.  And usually my first reaction is worry, anxiety, and fear.  It’s like a nagging pit in my stomach that can be pushed aside temporarily, but it usually stays simmering just under the surface.

Last week as I was facing one of these situations, I remembered the prayer of  Solomon.

You see Solomon, known for being the wisest man who ever lived, wasn’t always wise. Solomon, the son of the mighty king David, ascended to the throne at a young age. It’s clear from scripture that he felt the weightiness of the position he was in.

Although Solomon accepted his position as king, he also realized he didn’t have what it took to lead Israel.  So when God asked Solomon what he wanted, Solomon replied “Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?” (2 Chronicles 1:10 NLT)

And God’s response was beautiful.  “I will certainly give you the wisdom and knowledge you requested. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor…” (2 Chronicles 1:12a, NLT)

Wow Solomon asked only for wisdom, but God gave him over and above what he asked for!

As I began a particularly challenging day at work last week, I prayed this prayer and asked God for wisdom to handle the situation.  I didn’t know how it would happen, but by the end of the day, God had given me exactly what I needed to handle the challenge.

This verse has become my go to verse as I seek wisdom in raising my children, working through challenging relationships, and dealing with tough situations at work.

Just like Solomon, I’m sure you feel the weight of the responsibilities you’ve been given.  But know that you don’t have to take those on alone.

Do you need wisdom? It is there for the asking.

“For the Lord gives wisdom;  from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6, NLT)
