We were not in agreement.
And that was okay.
In any relationship, there will be a difference of thoughts and opinions.
We won’t align every single time.
But you know what I’ve learned the hard way?
The beauty of silence during a disagreement.
There’s a high likelihood I’ll mess up and say something I’ll regret when emotions are high.
Yes, I need to get things off my chest, but doing it when I’m calm makes for a peaceful conversation.
The Bible gives us some advice:
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19
“The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.” Proverbs 17:27
Job’s story also reminds me of the beauty of silence.
Remember his friends? They mistakenly thought their words were helpful when he was going through a dark season.
They hurt instead.
They were trying to explain what was inexplicable.
Another time to stay quiet: when you are conversing with God and need to hear His voice.
Life is loud. Phones are loud. TVs are loud. Computers are loud.
Turn it off… and you will hear the sweet sound of silence.
What do you think Daniel heard when he was surrounded by lions?
Moses in the desert as he fled in humiliation from Egypt?
Esther, heartbroken and fasting in the chambers after hearing about the plot to kill her people?
They all listened for the voice of God.
I imagine an English guard standing tall at the door of my mouth when I read this verse:
“Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” Psalm 141:3
I need that guard every single day.
A few times I’ve learned to be quiet:
– When I’m angry
– When someone is hurting
– When I’m talking to Jesus
I challenge you in the kindest way possible- Be Quiet.
Before this new year starts, spend some time in silence. God has things to share in the stillness.
When you have a friend hurting, stay quiet. Your presence is enough.
Finally, when you’re a boiling pot, be quiet until you’ve simmered down.
You won’t regret it.
