One of my favorite stories in the Bible is found in 2 Chronicles 20. In this chapter we read how the enemies of Israel had come to wage war against King Jehoshaphat of Judah.
The people brought the bad news to the King…a vast army was coming towards them and they were ready to fight. But King Jehoshaphat did not panic. Instead he wisely brought together the people of Judah and sought the Lord in this matter.
He called on the God of his ancestors….gave him glory for what He had already done…., and reminded him of his promise to Abraham and his descendants. He declared before the Lord “…we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” (2 Chronicles 20:12).
Then the Lord spoke through a Levite among them saying “‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15b)
Jehoshaphat set out the next day and instead of sending his army to the front lines, he sent his worshippers out first. And as they sang and worshipped the Lord, the enemies of Jehoshaphat got confused and began fighting each other, until they were completely destroyed.
And the people rejoiced because God had indeed fought their battle as he said He would.
Today it seems like there are battles waging all around us….in our homes, in our cities, in our nation. I believe that just as the people of Judah, we are called to fight this battle on our knees and in worship. I pray that you are encouraged to not fight with our words, but with our prayers.
I’ve been singing this song a lot lately as it is a powerful reminder of that promise.
