When my husband, Lance, started traveling for work many years ago, it was really hard. I wasn’t used to being alone in the house and not seeing him everyday.

Eventually, I did get used to it…and actually started to enjoy some of the perks of it.

(Um…Maybe I should clarify.)

Of course, I would prefer to have my husband home but his frequent trips have entitled him to some benefits. Now, we don’t have to take off our shoes at security or wait in long lines for a rental car.

So, when I travel with Lance, his status becomes my status. Basically, I tag along and he announces, “She’s with me”.  And I’m in.  No questions asked.

Knowing your position changes everything.

John 13:2 It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

There are a million reasons to love Jesus and to want to be like Him.  This is one of them.

How in the world could Jesus wash the feet of the men who would abandon him and the man who had betrayed him?

It could be summarized like this: Jesus knew…so He…

He knew who He was. He knew who His Father was.  Jesus knew that one day, He would be with His Father again.  His identity wasn’t based on what Judas was about to do. It was based on His place with the Father.

The same could be said of us.

Our position as children of God doesn’t elevate us to a superior status, but to a higher service. We don’t react to others according to who they are or what they’ve done.  Instead, we respond because of Whose we are and what God has done.

Rather than retaliating or proving ourselves, we wash feet.

Now, we know…so we…
