I like big purses and I cannot lie…
I’m not a fancy brand kind of girl. I don’t like to change out purses either. I just want one purse that looks good and can hold EVERYTHING I need.
My husband gawks at how large my purses are but when he wants hand sanitizer, lotion or gum, guess who he turns to?
My friends have reaped the benefits of it too.
What do you need girl? Ibuprofen? A pen, pencil or highlighter? Eyebrows need tweezing? I’ve got you covered.
The bridal/baby shower game called “What’s In Your Purse?”…that is MY game.
Now as much as I love big purses, I was feeling a bit insecure about my most recent purchase. Would people think it was a tote bag or a small carry-on? As I walked into a restaurant recently, I was convinced a couple was talking about the size of my purse (because what else would they be talking about??).
I asked my friends for their honest input and they gave it to me. They know I like things organized so would a big purse be right for me? Things could get lost at the bottom and hard to find. One friend is a physical therapist so she was concerned about me carrying it all the time.
But then they asked the question… “Do you like it? Do you feel like it will work for you?” My answer was… “If I wasn’t concerned about what other people thought, this is the purse I would use.”
Why in the world am I telling you about my purse purchase? Because I think a lot of people treat their gifts, talents and calling that way.
We know what we like to do. We know what comes naturally to us. We know what we are drawn to. Unfortunately, we just stop ourselves from doing anything about it because of what people may say.
So, I’ll ask you…If you weren’t concerned about what other people thought, what would you be doing?
Don’t get me wrong – wise counsel is important and we should listen to that. But if we’re doing or not doing something based on the random couple at the restaurant and not what God says, then that’s another issue.
In John 6, when a crowd gathered to hear Jesus teach, He instructed the disciples to feed them. Phillip questioned how this was even possible…but from behind the scenes, Andrew, the brother of Peter and a relatively uncelebrated disciple of Jesus, came forward with a young boy’s lunch.
I wonder what he thought as he presented this to Jesus, with all eyes on him. The other disciples, the crowd, even Jesus…what would they think?
In her post, Mention It to Jesus, Binu writes about Andrew’s “faith and boldness” and adds this, “God still takes the little we have, but are willing to offer up..and He does the miraculous.”
If we can push past our concerns of what the crowd might say, we could give them exactly what they need.
If you’re with me, that means I would have a safety pin or umbrella when you need one. With Andrew that day, the people got lunch, the disciples had leftovers…and they all encountered the supernatural power of Jesus Christ.
If you weren’t concerned about what other people thought, what would you be doing?
Proverbs 29:25 (TPT) Fear and intimidation is a trap that holds you back. But when you place your confidence in the Lord, you will be seated in the high place.
