How many of us trudge through our week and our jobs, working just to bring home a paycheck, with our eyes focused solely on getting to the weekend?
This weekend at church, the guest speaker, Rabbi Daniel Lapin, challenged us to take a different perspective of our work.
Rabbi Lapin correlated the word “work” and “worship” through a few scriptures and pointed out that the same Hebrew word was used in place of both of these words. His point was that work and worship should be regarded together. Our worship is not just praising God, but worship also happens when we do our jobs well.
Is the work you do for your employer or your customers done in a manner that you can say is pleasing worship to God?
Do you go above and beyond? Or do you do just enough to get by?
I believe that when we work as though we are worshipping the Lord, there is a beautiful reward that comes from that.
One of my favorite Bible characters that exemplifies this work ethic was Joseph.
While serving time in an Egyptian prison for a crime he didn’t commit, he faithfully served the prison warden and his fellow inmates. His service did not go unnoticed, as the warden soon put him in charge of his fellow prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.
As a result of his faithful service, eventually he was moved out of the prison and into the palace to be second in command in the land of Egypt.
I love reading about Joseph’s life because he didn’t let his unjust imprisonment stop him from working and worshipping as though he was doing it for the Lord his God.
Are you in a difficult place in work or in your personal life? My simple advice from having gone through this many times is to push through and don’t give up. Don’t entertain negative thoughts or conversations that would make you bitter. But instead work as though you are working for the Lord.
Your worship and your faithfulness are not lost on Him, or on those around you. As you work and worship through it, I believe that your character and maturity will be developed for the next season of elevation that God is going to bring you to. Don’t stop short, and don’t think that your work is in vain. He knows and He sees all of it.
