“Time … to … make …. the … donuts …”

Remember that famous line aired on commercials for Dunkin Donuts? The iconic employee could be seen slowly getting out of bed early in the morning to make the donuts that America loves.

“Oh whistle while you work …”

Maybe you’re familiar with that catchy tune from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

I was thinking how most of us fall into one of two categories: either we dread going to our job or we look forward to it. Sure, there are hard days and challenges with any job, but there are people who are genuinely passionate about what they do.

My sister is one of the people who loves what she does for a living. From the moment she expressed her aspiration to become a doctor, it was evident she was called to do it. Not only does my sister work hard and with excellence, but she does it all with humility. Her deep desire to help people is obvious as she listens and empathizes. Ultimately, she knows what she does is a gift from the Lord and stewards it with great grace.

What is most noticeable about how my sister works is that a smile is consistently visible. In fact, just the other day someone we had met shared how they were astounded by her kind demeanor.

Listen, I know we all have a job to earn a paycheck. But what is the position of our hearts when we work? Are we doing it grudgingly or cheerfully? Are we shining the light of God?

The Bible has much to say about how we work:
Colossians 3:23 (TPT) reminds us: Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others.”
1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV): “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

The Bible also indicates there is a blessing for having such an attitude:
Proverbs 13:4 (ESV): “the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.”
Colossians 3:24 (TPT) states, “For we know that we will receive a reward, an inheritance from the Lord, as we serve the Lord Yahweh, the Anointed One!”

Dear Friend, “There is nothing better for a person than that he should … find enjoyment in his toil.” (Ecclesiastes 2:24 ESV) May the joy of the Lord be evident in whatever we do, whether it’s sitting in a boardroom, teaching children, filling a prescription, or crunching numbers. And may His name be glorified!

P.S. Since I don’t have a pic of my sister while she is at the hospital, my next best is when she was an amazing matron of honor :)
