Do you feel like your background limits you from the potential God has for you?

Maybe you had a parent that was an alcoholic, or divorced, or struggled with bitterness and anger?

It’s hard to believe that your life will end up any different from theirs.

But it doesn’t have to be.

In the scripture we read about a man named Korah.

Korah lead a rebellion against Moses and Aaron by planting doubts in the people’s minds of whether they were really chosen by God to lead Israel.

The interesting thing is that Korah had already been given a special responsibility in ministry.

You see, Korah was a descendant from the tribe of Levi.  And as a Levite, he and his family were given the privilege of serving God and ministering to the people of God.

But Korah wasn’t satisfied with the duties he had been given.  He seemed to be wanting more.

As a result of Korah’s rebellion, Moses called upon God to prove to Israel if Moses and Aaron were the ones chosen to lead Israel.

God answer was swift and undeniable.

The earth opened up and literally swallowed up Korah and 250 of his followers and their families right before their eyes.

But several chapter later, the scripture mentions something seemingly small, but something so significant.

Numbers 26: 10-11 says “But the earth opened up its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, and fire devoured 250 of their followers. This served as a warning to the entire nation of Israel. However, the sons of Korah did not die that day.

Did you catch that?  The sons of Korah did not die along with their father.  While most of the other followers of Korah’s families died with them that day, Korah’s sons did not die with him.

But what did happen to the sons of Korah then?

Well, when you go on to read the book of Psalms, the writers credit some of the most beautiful Psalms to the sons of Korah.  One of the most notable is Psalms 42 that says “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs for you oh God”.

Coming from the background that they did, one would think they would do what their father did.

But they didn’t.

Instead, Korah’s sons made a choice to live a life that was different from the path of their father.

They chose to serve God as they were intended and the Psalms they wrote show us that their lives took a beautiful turn for the good.

Do you think your background and upbringing has sentenced you to stay in the same cycle as your family?  Think again.

I hope you know that you can make a choice to be different, and see God turn your story into something more beautiful than you ever imagined.
