I know we sounded like crazy parents, but we couldn’t help ourselves.
In the days leading up to dropping our son off to college, my husband and I felt the need to squeeze in every last piece of advice we could think of…
Don’t do weed. People may try to convince you that it’s practically legal and there’s health benefits to it. Don’t do it!!
Read your Bible and pray every single day. Actually-lets make that twice a day!
Don’t microwave foil.
Don’t buy or accept Adderall or any other “focus medication” from anyone (apparently, this stuff has a high street value and is rampant on college campuses).
If you’re feeling down, turn on worship music. It will change the atmosphere.
-If you want friends, be friendly (Proverbs 18:24).
-But not too friendly. Who you hang out with is who you become. (Proverbs 13:20). Remember, iron sharpens iron. Ask God for discernment in choosing your friends.
-If a girl seems crazy & aggressive, she probably is. Stay away!! “Like an ox going to the slaughter…she will cost you your life.” (Proverbs 7:22)
-Don’t lean back in your chair…you may fall and hit your head.
I told you we sounded crazy…but it was our last ditch effort to reiterate advice from eighteen years of parenting.
I wonder if Moses felt the same as he gave his final farewell to Joshua & his fellow Israelites after being their guardian for the past forty years. Moses had said it all before, but he felt the need to say it again…
-Be strong and courageous.
-The Lord himself goes before you.
-Obey carefully all the words of this law. They are NOT JUST IDLE WORDS for you-THEY ARE YOUR LIFE.
The Apostle Paul also took the time to write two whole letters filled with advice to young Timothy, his spiritual son…
-Don’t be ashamed to testify about our Lord
-Avoid godless chatter
-Be kind
-Watch your back with Alexander, the metalworker. He did me wrong, he might do you wrong too.
And we can’t forget Jesus’ last words to His disciples before His ascension into heaven…
-Preach, Baptize, Make disciples.
-I will be with you.
Whatever chapter of life you are embarking upon… A new school or a new type of online school, a new job or a new way of doing your job ‘from home,’ the start of a young family or the beginning of an empty nest…
God’s directives for us have not changed.
-Be courageous.
-Be kind.
-Preach, Baptize, Make disciples.
-The Lord is with you.
