In Luke 21:26, it talks about a time when there will be “…men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world”.

These words were said by Jesus over 2000 years ago about His second coming but it seems that we can apply them today. Jesus may not return before COVID-19 is gone so what do we do in the meanwhile when chaos is around us and panic has gripped the hearts of people all over the world?

He continues … “But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28)

When Jesus spoke to His followers about things to come, there was a common theme … Be ready, fear not and pray.

  1. BE READY – In regards to the Coronavirus, from good hygiene to general supplies, there are things you can do to prepare yourself.  You can find some good information here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/get-your-household-ready-for-COVID-19.html.

  2. FEAR NOT – Did you know that “Fear not” is the most repeated command in the Bible?  In fact, it is mentioned 365 times. That tells us a couple of things – God knew there would be times we would be afraid but He also knew that we didn’t need to be.  “.. in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 AMP)

  3. PRAY – Jimmy Evans said “Turn your worry list into a prayer list.”  When COVID-19 has passed, there will be other challenges that come our way.  No matter what the situation is, we believe that our God can calm the storm but He can also calm His child.  “Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah” (Psalm 32:6-7 ESV)

As we continue to walk out this situation, what are some things we can specifically pray for?

  • Comfort for those who have lost loved ones
  • Complete healing for the people who have been infected
  • Containment of the virus – that it would not spread any more
  • The economy and livelihood of everyone impacted by travel bans, event cancellations, etc.
  • Healthcare workers who are caring for the sick
  • Peace to reign and the spirit of fear to be gone in Jesus’ name
