Two months ago when my husband was laid off, a precious friend told me to keep my eyes open for the blessings in this unexpected season.
My internal response was, “Blessings?” All I could seem to focus on was my list of worries. I mean, it’s a struggle to see anything to be grateful for when we find ourselves in a difficult place, right? But I was challenged to take my friend’s advice and as a result, I did see many blessings in that season. I will be sharing some of these this month in celebration of Thanksgiving.
One of the greatest blessings I am thankful for is my husband’s attitude.
You see, I felt that if I was in his shoes, I may have opted to stay in bed longer than usual as I pitied myself. I may have been desperate in my job search, regardless of interest or qualification. I may have begged God and reminded Him frequently of my doubts and fears.
But my husband’s attitude was different. He started each day just like he always does. He woke up early and spent time in worship and prayer with our Father. Then, my husband set out to apply for jobs and network with folks in his industry. He had a daily list of tasks to accomplish. I saw the following verses at work in my husband: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,” (Colossians 3:23) and “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9 ESV)
My husband knew what he wanted. He didn’t waver as he heard from recruiters who offered positions he wasn’t interested in. My husband was confident that God knew his heart’s desires and would grant them in His perfect time. He believed “… that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” (Philippians 1:6 ESV) My husband was rooted in 2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV): “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Dear Friend, do you find yourself in the midst of the unanticipated? I pray God helps you to have an attitude that points others to Him: one that demonstrates hope, diligence, and trust in the Lord.
