Do you ever wonder if what you’re doing is worth the effort? I mean, there can be so many ups and downs when you set out to accomplish a goal that it can just become exhausting and maybe, discouraging.

I was reminded how several years ago, our oldest daughter attended a camp where she was introduced to the fine details of photography. From that experience, she was recommended as a volunteer photographer at our church campus. Faithfully, our daughter could be seen zipping up, down, and all-around during services as she clicked away.

There was much to learn and develop. A peer mentored her and our youth pastor encouraged her. We watched as she whisked her little sister outdoors for photo sessions. You see, our daughter was determined to harness the skills needed to photograph with excellence.

Slowly but surely, she was presented with a myriad of opportunities from photographing families to special events such as bridal showers and appreciation dinners, not to mention the meet and greet Whispers & Fringes had as we signed our book, Quest for More (available on Amazon). Most were done voluntarily and some she was hired to do.

Without a doubt, photography has become our daughter’s passion. But one couldn’t help but wonder if this accumulation of pics would ever materialize into more?

Well, our daughter came across a college ministry that meets weekly with several hundreds of students. When the call came to volunteer, she was quick to respond. To her excitement, there were openings for photographers on the creative team! And do you know what the application process involved? She had to provide a portfolio with a variety of shots in different settings. Check! Our daughter prayerfully submitted them and waited.

Then, the acceptance arrived! Wow, taking on all those years of assignments with humility and a great work ethic had paid off. Needless to say, she has been elated beyond words. We are grateful to the Lord our daughter now has this opportunity.

So back to my original question. David may have wondered if it was worth caring for sheep while being lonely and smelly. Joseph may have wondered if it was worth being faithful as he went from one predicament to another. Paul may have wondered if his missionary trips and letters were worth it while combatting persecution and imprisonment.

Here’s what the Bible says: “Steady plodding brings prosperity;” (Proverbs 21:5 TLB) In other words when we work diligently, we will find ourselves flourishing for the glory of God. Just as we read in Scripture, David’s tender care resulted in him leading as king, Joseph’s faithfulness saved a nation from starvation, and Paul’s commitment yielded countless souls dedicating their lives to the Lord.

Be encouraged today dear Friend: “… let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9 ESV)
