I have been thinking a lot about legacy.
A few years ago, one of our cousins asked my husband and me: “What do you want your legacy to be?” We had a healthy discussion, and then I didn’t really think more about it. Life happened and I amped myself up to keep up with the pace of it.
Fast forward a few years, a few gray hairs, and a few unexpected funerals, and it’s weighing on my mind.
One of my favorite psalms, Psalms 112 paints a beautiful picture of what our legacy will look like as children of God.
“Happy are those who fear the Lord. Yes, happy are those who delight in doing what he commands. Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed” (Ps 112:1-2, NLT)
That should be enough right there. My children will be successful and bless an entire generation. I receive it!
“They themselves will be wealthy, and their good deeds will never be forgotten.” (verse 3)
“…those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly” (vs 6-8)
“They give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will never be forgotten. They will have influence and honor.” (vs 9)
Wow. This is what the word of God says about YOU! The chapter is full of what our legacy will look like.
I didn’t include all of the verses in the chapter. You need to go read it, underline and highlight it for yourself.
I am challenging myself and want to encourage you, too: Let’s start living this legacy now. Let’s walk in the promises from this chapter. Let’s live from a place of victory- a place of less worry and stress. We know how our story ends. We know how our children will live. We know what kind of legacy we will leave. For me personally, I want to carry on the legacy of what I loved about my friends and family. I want to be as generous as my husband who would give you the shirt, pants and shoes he was wearing. I want to be like my friend that greets me every time with a bear hug or his wife who lights up a room and brings joy with her wherever she goes. I want to be like my friends that bring food for an army when you tell them they can bring you a snack. Or my friends that leave ice cream in my freezer for my birthday. Or the ones that send cookies when they know we’re having a tough week. God has blessed me with some amazing friends, and I strive to be like them.
I want to walk out my legacy now, not when I am gone. I want to show love the way God intended.
