While we were completing our road trip in Denver, the Museum of Nature and Science had an exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Having spent the last year reading through the entire Bible as part of Whispers and Fringes’ discipleship program, I could not have been more excited to see this exhibit. Not only did we see the manuscripts and biblical documents found in caves near the Dead Sea, there were inscriptions and seals, weapons, stone carvings, terra cotta figurines, coins, shoes, textiles, mosaics, ceramics, and jewelry that were 2,000 years old.
What caught my attention in particular were sandals worn by people living in that time. From my observation, these sandals did not have a designer label or appear to be made of the finest materials. Honestly, they didn’t even look comfortable! I then glanced at my own sandals, which is known for its comfort, that looked a bit worn after being used for a year or two. How is it possible that the sandals I was staring at in the glass case did not wear out as the Israelites were in the wilderness for FORTY years?
In Deuteronomy 29:5, we read “Yet the LORD says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.”
God. It was all God. He led them. He miraculously provided for them. He protected them.
I don’t know where you find yourself today. Maybe you’re feeling a bit worn out from the circumstances of life. You were expecting to be married by now, but you haven’t met the right person. You had hoped to be at the pinnacle of your career, yet progress is slow. You pour your time and energy into parenting and it seems as if your children are always struggling.
Worn out. Tired. Ready to just give up and throw in the towel.
What has kept you going? Or WHO has kept you from falling apart?
God. It is all God. He is with us. He gives us strength when we feel as if we’re running on fumes. Just as God’s grace sustained the Israelites’ sandals for forty years, His grace will sustain you and I as we walk through the wearisome moments of life.
Dear Friend, I pray that God renews your strength and restores your hope. After all, we serve the God of miracles.
