When I was single, I spent time imagining what marriage would be like. Between owning a home and starting a family, I was excited by the very idea because it seemed easy and dreamy in my mind.
What can I say? I was young and naive lol.
Then, I said “I do” and discovered there were many moments that were not easy. During the times that my husband and I misunderstood each other, it felt easier to just sweep it under the rug. I mean, who wants to have a challenging conversation that requires time and energy? But we knew we were called to be husband and wife so we had to ask God for help on how to talk about the conflict and resolve it.
I think it’s safe to say we have all experienced such a predicament in our lives, whether it’s in our relationships, finances, health, job, etc. Somehow, making excuses seems okay to avoid doing what we know is right.
Here’s the thing though: Jesus Himself said, “In this godless world you will … experience difficulties.” (John 16:33 MSG).
Dear Friend, there are times we have to do the hard things by pressing through and keep doing our best … even if we feel hesitant or uncomfortable.
This is evident in the life of David as we have been studying the book of 1st Samuel on Saturday mornings. His father and brothers didn’t think much of him. King Saul threatened David’s life. He had to live as a fugitive … all while knowing he was anointed to be the next king of Israel. Talk about difficult circumstances! But we read how he sought the Lord for help and he did the hard things in those instances by continuing to work hard, remain loyal, and do his best. David was committed to obeying God’s will even when it was difficult.
Philippians 2:14-15 (ESV) reminds us, “Do all things without grumbling … that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”
