Have you ever been in a position to set someone else up for success?
It’s never glamourous or easy.
In fact, it goes against human nature to help someone else knowing that you won’t get credit for it.
King David found himself in a similar position.
From the time of Moses, the presence of God dwelled in the tabernacle – which was basically a tent that would move with the people of God as they made their journey towards the promised land.
Fast forward many years.
The people of Israel have inhabited the promised land. They were now a real nation under the leadership of King David – who had some pretty noteworthy accomplishments.
He unified Israel, he established Jerusalem as their capital, and brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem from the Philistines.
But as he neared the end of his life, his heart was grieved knowing that he lived in a beautiful house of cedar wood, while the presence of God still dwelled in a tent.
He determined in his heart that he would build the Lord a temple as a more permanent home for the presence of God on earth.
But David’s life was marked by much violence and bloodshed.
And although God was pleased that David desired to build a temple, God would not allow David to build it.
Instead the responsibility was given to David’s son Solomon.
At this point, David could have just washed his hands of the whole thing because he wasn’t allowed to build it. But the beauty of David’s heart is that he didn’t let that stop him from setting up Solomon for success.
He meticulously gathered supplies and appointed the labor needed to take on this huge project.
He didn’t leave it all up to Solomon. He did what he could to give his son the best chance to complete the project. And Solomon did just that. The temple was eventually finished and God’s presence inhabited it.
Is there something that God is asking you to do to set someone else up for success? It might not bring you the credit you may want, but it could have an impact that could far outlive you.
I pray that you will be able to work behind the scenes to accomplish something with an impact far greater than you could imagine.
