Have you ever looked around at your life and thought “How did I get here”?

My Bible reading this week has taken me to the escapades of David. He has gone from shepherd boy to giant killer to anointed king, and currently, in my reading, he is a fugitive. What a crazy series of events.

What particularly spoke to me this week was the story of how David became commander over his group. He is alone when he runs away from Saul and ends up in the cave of Adullam. His family hears about his location and they decide to join him. 1 Samuel 22:2 says that “All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander.”

Distress. Debtors. Discontented. None of these are qualities that I look for in my inner circle or even my team at work. Nothing about those adjectives screams “Pick me! Choose me! Love me!”

The Bible does not give us any indication that David complained about this crew. He led them faithfully and they went on to win countless battles.

Maybe you don’t know how you got here. Maybe your story has gone from giant slayer to cave dweller. Maybe your team doesn’t look like what you expected. Be faithful. Be submitted. Be covered in prayer and worship. God has a plan for you outside of that cave and He can use your sphere of influence to accomplish it.
