“God, if You could speak to Moses through a burning bush, could you please do the same for me?”

I can’t tell you how many times I have prayed that prayer…A burning bush, a visitation from an angel, I have always longed for a GRAND encounter with God.

And in my forty year journey with the Lord, guess how many burning bushes I’ve seen? Zero.

It’s not that God is ignoring me, He’s not. In His infinite grace and wisdom, God has still shown up in undeniably big ways…just not through a burning bush, but rather through a burning heart…like He did for the two men on the road to Emmaus.

Luke 24 tells their story.

The events take place on the same day of Jesus’ resurrection. Two of Jesus followers were on their way to a village called Emmaus. As they walked along, they were discussing everything that had just taken place…the crucifixion of the one they thought would redeem Israel.

“As they talked…Jesus himself suddenly came and walked along with them, but God kept them from recognizing him.”

The conversation began with one of the men, Cleopas, informing Jesus of the political climate and the current events of Israel, “We had hoped He (Jesus) was the one who was going to redeem Israel,” but the conversation ended with Jesus walking them through the Scriptures and the breaking of bread.

“As they sat down to eat, He took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! They said to each other, “Didn’t our HEARTS BURN within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”

The more time these men spent with Jesus, the more the Scriptures came to life for them…and their hearts burned!

We all have an Emmaus road.

A journey filled with highs and lows. A journey filled with disappointments because what we expected God would do, He didn’t do.

It’s on THAT road, God wants to meet us. He wants to walk with us and take us through His Word. And like the two men, the more time we spend with Jesus, the more the Scriptures will come to life for us…and our hearts will burn!

We may never see a talking burning bush like Moses did…and that’s okay. God would rather set our HEARTS ON FIRE as we spend time with Him.
