Lately I’ve been listening to some content online about health and the benefits of certain habits, such as fasting.  There was one weekend a few weeks ago that I stumbled upon one video and continued to listen to several videos in the series.  Hearing the science behind how our bodies respond to things like sugar, fats, and fasting was fascinating.  I couldn’t get enough of it.  And what I didn’t realize was, I started making some of the positive changes without much effort – which resulted in me eating better, feeling better, and even losing a couple of pounds.

It was really great…for a while.  I soon let other things take my focus away from listening to health content to listening to other things.  And when this happened, I gradually started to slip back into my comfortable way of eating and not so healthy habits.

The less I listened to the health podcasts, the less I followed the good advice.

Could it be that God knew a little about this before I saw this at work in my life?

Scripture says “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

If I am going to implement good changes in my life, I have to hear it first.  And by hearing, it gets into my mind, and then my heart, and finally into my actions.

I found that I must be intentional about what I listen to because that is what drives what I actually end up doing.

Both physically and spiritually this is a powerful concept.

Do I want to be physically healthier?  Then maybe it’s time to get back to listening to those podcasts and youtube videos that remind me of what I need to do to take care of my body.

Do I want to grow in my faith?  Then I need to fill my mind with the word of God.

And when I do, my actions will line up with what I have been filling my mind with.

I think it’s time for me to get back to filling my mind with good stuff, so that my life produces the fruit I desire to see.
