Even with all that’s going on in the world, I think we can all agree on the fact that life doesn’t stop for anyone. Unfortunately, people continue to struggle with feeling ill with varying health issues, to receive difficult diagnoses and prognoses, to need chemotherapy or radiation, and the list goes on.
I’m no exception to this. While it may not be life-threatening, sinus issues have been so challenging that I require surgery. In preparation for such, I had to have a COV-ID test. Honestly, just hearing about this swab had made me queasy.
As I pulled up to the hospital to have it done, I was greeted by two nurses seated outside … in Texas. They were friendly and engaged immediately in conversation. I watched as they were going through all the protocols and procedures, from putting on a gown, gloves, an additional mask to ensuring all the paperwork was in order.
Finally, when it was all set, one nurse came over and began explaining what was going to be done. He was calm and gentle. His demeanor and assurance certainly put me at ease and while the swab felt awful, it was done way faster and smoother than I expected. To say I was relieved when it was done is an understatement.
What remained with me from this experience was how the nurses did their job with excellence. I imagine that years ago when they were in nursing school, they did not envision themselves in this particular scenario. I suspect that when all these new policies became effective, there was not only a learning curve but also, emotions about having to navigate through this crazy. In spite of whatever may have been going through their mind, I didn’t sense any of it. Instead, I dealt with two professionals who had an amazing curbside manner.
Whether we look at Joseph working in Potiphar’s house while being tempted by Potiphar’s wife or at David playing music to appease King Saul’s unhappy spirit, we see how ideal circumstances were lacking in those positions. Yet, each of them did what they were called to do in those positions. They worked with integrity and they did their best. Ultimately, a promotion was seen in each of their careers.
Colossians 3:23 (TPT) reminds us, “Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others.” and 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) states, “… whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
I don’t know what your present circumstances look like, Friend. Perhaps you’re not happy where you’re working because you don’t feel valued or maybe you’re facing opposition. Perhaps the newest set of procedures seem to just suck all the joy from what you love to do. May these truths found in God’s Word guide you to keep your eyes focused on the Lord and to work diligently. The light you shine impacts those you interact with allowing them to experience a piece of heaven here on earth, just like I did.
