Bug Off!

By |September 1st, 2016|Categories: Misc.|Comments Off on Bug Off!

I know that summer is slowly coming to an end, but I wanted to share this article.  It's a good one to save and revisit next year. For the past few summers, I have searched to find safe mosquito/bug repellant to use on my children.  My younger one must have a bulls-eye on her back, because if there is a mosquito within a 5 mile radius of her, it will find her and leave its mark.  During the summer, I was spraying them almost daily and became increasingly worried about spraying them so often.  Several moms that I have talked

Our Anchor

By |August 30th, 2016|Categories: Devotionals, Facebook|Tags: , , , , |Comments Off on Our Anchor

I was recently given a beautiful necklace with an anchor on it. Wearing it has made me reflect on the One Who has held me firmly in my place, providing me with stability and confidence in uncertain situations. In fact, I recalled a childhood memory which was one of the most frightening moments of my life.  I was eight years old and on a LONG flight from New York to India with my family. I was surrounded by families like mine who were on vacation to visit grandparents and extended family members.  As it was nearing time for lunch, the flight

A Soft Answer

By |August 26th, 2016|Categories: Devotionals, Misc.|Tags: |Comments Off on A Soft Answer

Earlier this week I was getting in the drive thru line at Chick-Fil-A.  There was another car pulled over to the side of the drive thru, but not actually in the drive thru line. So I went ahead and got in line with my car. When I did so, that car that was pulled over to the side started honking at me and drove up right behind me in the line in an angry manner. I could see the woman who was driving that car yelling at me through my rear view mirror. At that point I figured that she

Let’s Get Real

One of the qualities that binds people together is transparency. When I was in college, I had an inclination to put on a smile and hide my shortcomings. It was a way to guard my heart and reputation, but it blocked me from connecting with people. Sure, I looked "put-together", but I really wasn't. It wasn't until my sister and I had one of those uncomfortable "heart-to-heart talks" did I realize that I was only hurting myself.  She made me realize that once those walls come down, people can relate to me, and I can start to have stronger relationships.

Faith Like a Child

I caught my two year old son talking quite seriously on his toy phone the other day. He seemed to be deep in conversation.  As I got closer to him, I heard him say, "In Jesus' name I pray." He was talking to Jesus! He had made the connection that prayer was talking to God, just like having any other conversation on the phone. Kids just get it, don't they? We, as adults, get caught up in the logistics and let religion get in the way of the simplicity of the gospel. Watching my son talk on his phone reminded

Back to School with Positive Words

Pencils sharpened. New outfits laid out.  Lunches ready to go. It's that time of year again when children head back to school. Is it me or does anyone else feel both excited and nervous for this adventure? "They're going to have so much fun!" "Oh I hope they have a kind and understanding teacher."  "They'll be challenged and learn a great deal!" "I just wish they would make friends easily and not be subject to bullying." God helps me put my mind at ease with the reminder of the power of our tongue.  Using the words which flow forth from our mouths,

A Picture is Worth…

My grandmother passed away yesterday. If you've been a part of the Whispers & Fringes community for a while, you might actually kinda know her. My sister, Binu, has shared several different posts based on conversations she had with my grandmother. And what conversations they were.  They not only resonated with us as her family, but it seemed to resonate with you as well. There's a lot of different things running through my mind right now....things that I am still processing.  But one thing I keep reflecting on at this particular moment isn't anything deep. It isn't even a particular

Thy Will Be Done

By |August 19th, 2016|Categories: Devotionals, Misc.|Tags: , |Comments Off on Thy Will Be Done

Lately I’ve been hearing the song “Thy Will” by Hillary Scott on the radio a lot. It’s a song about trying to trust God through the difficult things in life that do not make sense. Hillary Scott said she wrote this song when she had gone through a miscarriage and she was in a dark and difficult place. The lyrics of the song are an honest cry to the Lord expressing pain and brokenness for what she had hoped for and lost. Yet she ultimately finds comfort by being still and resting in the truth that God is a good

Be Ready

By |August 19th, 2016|Categories: Devotionals|Comments Off on Be Ready

Next time you go to pick up a "Hot and Ready Pizza," but find there are no pizzas hot or ready ...God may be up to something. Speaker Holly Wagner challenged the ladies at our church's recent women's conference to always be ready to share God's love with those around us. Holly said, 'You may have to get off your phones to do this. But look around and make eye contact with those around you. It may be while you are waiting in line at the grocery store or waiting at the car wash, wherever you are, be ready and
