Making Room
I work in a county hospital. And not just any county hospital. A very large & busy county hospital. So you know what that means… Crowded elevators. When you hit the button and it comes within 30 seconds, it’s time for a praise dance. Most times, you are left waiting...and waiting...and then waiting some more. You hit the button again (like that really does anything). You pace. You look at your phone. You attempt to avoid eye contact with the other people waiting with you. Then, someone makes a joke about how long the elevators take to get here. And
Now I See…
A few weeks ago, I was driving my father in law’s car when I noticed the clock had not been updated after daylight savings time had ended. I decided to take it upon myself to fix the time in the car while I was in the car. It was dark outside at the time, so the only lights in the car was the light that lights up the car’s dashboard and radio console when you turn your headlights on. Because this wasn’t my car, I wasn’t totally familiar with how to change the time on the car. As I was
The Power of Influence
Did you know at one point last season, the New England Patriots' 3 star receivers along with Rob Gronkowski, the best tight end in the NFL, were all injured? These facts may not surprise you, but the fact that I know these facts, should. I have never (ever) been into sports but now sports is part of who I am. Between my two boys and my husband, I am outnumbered. I wasn't trying to increase my sports IQ, but because of who surrounds me, I now know the difference between a pick, pick 6 and a pick and roll. In
The “R” in Pray
As part of my effort to improve my prayer life, lately I have been trying to follow the method of prayer endorsed by Priscilla Shirer in "Fervent". She uses the acronym "PRAY" as a tool to help people like me have some structure in their prayers. The P is for praise. R stands for repentance. A is asking, and Y is yes- where you pray His promises over your life. When I first started using this technique, I would skip over the repentance part. What did I need to do that for? I didn't commit any major sins - no
The Same but Different
I borrowed my husband's car a few days ago and had a hard time checking my blind spot when changing lanes. It was not because the car was old, it was actually the opposite. My car is older and does not have the same amenities that newer cars do. When changing lanes, I am required to physically turn my head and look through the window to check for other drivers in my blind spot. My husband's car is newer and allows the driver to use special mirrors attached to the side mirrors so that without turning your head, you can
My Heroes
Amazing super powers. Beating the bad guy. Cool costume. These are some responses one may hear when asking a child to describe their hero. Christopher Reeve, who is known best for his portrayal of Superman, said, “I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” During my parents’ annual trip to India eight years ago, they were involved in a terrifying car accident just hours after landing. My father had been pinned under the car, which flipped over, and both my mom and paternal grandmother were ejected several feet
The Greater Plan
Every day, for the past 40+ years, my dad takes a peanut butter & jelly sandwich to work for lunch. The only exception was when the local Mexican restaurant had a Wednesday enchilada special. In addition to that, he has a daily “routine” which includes exercising before & after work, reading the Bible and praying in the evening with my mom then asleep by 9 p.m.. So, the fact that I am a structured person shouldn’t surprise you. It is part of my DNA. Case in point: My husband & I had lunch plans yesterday so I asked him what
All Things Are Possible
I’ve had a struggle for years that just felt I could never overcome. It started with what I would constantly negatively confess, without even realizing it. And that is “I’m just not a morning person”. I didn’t see any harm in saying that, because the truth is, that’s how I felt. I felt like the morning’s were so hard for me, but if you asked me to stay up all night, no problem, I could do that easily. So, as I was looking at my goals for 2016, I wrote down that 2016 HAS to be different for me in
Stupid Doesn’t Fix Stupid
"Stupid doesn't fix stupid" (pardon my French )....but I thought to share with you the profound advice I gave to my 14 year old son this past week. He filled me in on a dispute he had with a difficult classmate, and after hearing the details of the situation, I agreed that he had every right to be angry. I understood why he responded the way he did- but just because I understood the response didn't make the response right. Proverbs 15:1 states "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger." In other words, you can't
Good Father
My son was sick a few weeks ago. He is hardly sick, and we were having a hard time figuring out what was wrong. All that he could specify was that his stomach was hurting. The nights were especially rough. He was unable to sleep and spent most of the night curled up in a ball in pain. After a day of this, we went to a pediatric urgent care. No relief. Two days later, we went to the ER. Two days later, we were at our pediatrician's office, and then back again two days after that. Every night I
