Proceed with Caution
What is your kryptonite? If you didn’t grow up watching “Superman”, you have no idea what I am talking about. Kryptonite was the one thing that would weaken Superman’s powers. I may not have superpowers but I know there are certain things I try to avoid because it isn’t what is best for me. For my husband, it is sweets. For me, it is chips. When they were in my pantry, I would look forward to eating my little fried tortilla chip flavored with hot chili pepper and lime...every single day. I remember telling my sister that I felt like
Your Story. His Glory.
Interesting. Intriguing. Inspiring. I always enjoy a great story. Between the characters, the challenges they face, and how they resolve the problem, I am literally all ears. Sometimes, we think that stories are limited to those which become famous such as the Helen Keller story, a blind and deaf woman who became a leading humanitarian in the 20th century. Sometimes, we think that great stories are from Biblical times such as the little boy David defeating the giant Goliath. But the reality is that we all have a story. While I was at the hospital over the weekend with loved ones, I interacted with a
The Boss
The morning prayer of my daughter, a kindergarten student, went something like this today: "Jesus, when I go to 12th grade, help me to do great. When I go to college, help me to do great. When I get a job, help me not to lose my job." I smiled. She started out so positive...then became a realist. Last week, the two of us had a discussion about a bus driver who lost his job because of a mistake he made. That likely triggered her to speak such a prayer. The struggle is real...at times our jobs can be stressful.
Intentionally Intentional
I was surprised when I looked at my calendar this particular day...not because of my nephew’s game...the other thing. “Text mom/dad you’re proud of them!” Huh?? Of course, I am proud of my parents but I didn’t have any particular plans that day to text them that. Then, I quickly realized, it was my husband who added the event to our calendar. The reason for the text? My in-laws were leaving that day to do medical missions work in the Philippines. The reason for adding it to our calendar? He was being intentional. The word “intentional” has gotten a lot
Life’s Bench
As I watched my younger son sit on the bench, I thought about you. He sat, he smiled , he cheered his team on....but beneath his happy exterior, I knew he was discouraged and dying to get onto the court. My son, Caleb, is a gifted basketball player. (Okay, so maybe I'm a little biased and maybe the hoop in the picture was lowered just a little for dramatic effect). But he does have skill and has been dribbling a ball since he could walk. But I trusted his coach's judgement and more importantly, I trusted his heart towards my son. For
What’s in Your Basket?
I have a confession to make (and what better place to share it than on social media, right?) Several weeks ago, I shared how I was asked to consider a position. Part one of my confession is that I quickly declined without even thinking or praying about it. The next day, when a friend said she hesitated to step up in her sphere of influence, I immediately encouraged her to remember her identity as daughter of the King and take a step of courage into the unknown. Part two of my confession is that I wasn't practicing what I was
Be A Donkey
I have been called many names in my lifetime. Some good- sister, wife, mother, friend. Some not so good- brat (I have an older brother), antagonizer (by my brother), instigator (by my brother again- we really do love each other), arguer (brother or spouse, you pick). I have probably even been called a donkey in a different form. Our journey through the Bible brought us to Balaam and his donkey this past month in Numbers 22. Again, it's a story that I have heard countless times in Sunday school. This time, after I read it, I heard a voice say
Mention it to Jesus
Sometimes it starts with a feeling... John chapter 6 tells the familiar story. Jesus was teaching. Crowds were listening. It was getting late. And instead of sending the people home like I would have done (can anyone say- Bye Felicia!) Jesus suggested they all eat dinner together. All five thousand of them. It gets better...Jesus also suggested that He and His disciples would take care of the bill. John 6: 7-9 picks up the story from there. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Little By Little
As we get older, we get wiser. For example, I’ve learned that I need a day off after the spring time change. Can I get a witness? Every year, it’s the same thing: spring forward an hour, be cranky the rest of the week. Apparently, it was started to help the farmers out. All I know is in the fall, we rejoice. In the spring, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth and excessive coffee consumption. The whole phenomena of daylight savings time is intriguing. Last week, we had the ability to jump from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. just like that.
